Discover: Lake Michigan

London-based Lake Michigan, aka singer-songwriter Chris Marks, charms with his dark, serious Nick-Cave-meets-Leonard-Cohen vocals that sound like they have been recorded lying down in an empty room.

Marks' limited melodic range lends more emphasis to the lyrics. Lake Michigan's songs are generally downbeat, slow and mellow, with lyrics characterised by poetic realism coupled with simplicity (“I'm leaving tomorrow, ok / there's nothing you can say / that will make me stay”). The songs seem to tell personal stories of depression and relationships breaking down. Marks' performance here is suitably honest and vulnerable, and easy to relate to.

Despite comparisons to significantly older artists, Marks has a sense of youthfulness to him, perhaps in the way he discusses these themes.

Lake Michigan's music has been received enthusiastically by many, and his new projects are worth following.
